N.I Small Schools Cup Football Update

Pictured: Aughnacloy College under 13 and under 15 football teams with coaches Mr Patterson and Mr Hall who recently travelled to Portstewart to play Dominican College in the N.I Small Schools Cup.

After two extremely tight matches both Aughnacloy teams emerged victorious. The under 13 team won 5-4 on penalties after a nail biting finish, whilst the under 15 team edged out their counterparts by one goal to nil. The under 13 team will now travel to play Knockbreda in the quarter final. The under 15 team now enter the draw for the semi finals and await news of their next opponent.

RAF Maths Challenge

Aughnacloy College hosted the RAF Maths Challenge on Friday 20th May in an attempt to make maths more exciting and demonstrate its relevance in the workplace. It was an outstanding success with all year 10 pupils taking part in a lesson of practical Maths.
Sergeant Darren Kiragan and Corporal John Carberry set up a variety of tasks for the pupils who were working in teams of six, in the context of RAF scenarios showing the importance of maths in RAF life. The hands-on curriculum linked activities, which were all strictly timed, included calculating the cooking times of different foods, loading various cargo shapes of different sizes into a cargo hold, examining security systems and plotting co-ordinates to arrange the flight plan for an important mission.
These activities not only gave the pupils practical examples of how Maths is used in everyday life but also gave opportunities to work on problem solving, communication and team work skills.

School Trip – Balmoral Show 2011

Aughnacloy College rewarded pupils for good behaviour and hard work from September with a whole school outing to the Balmoral Show on Thursday 12th May.

Buses departed school at 9am and returned at 5pm, all pupils thoroughly enjoyed their day out!

Year 9 History Trip – May 2011

Aughnacloy College class 9-1 went on a trip to the Omagh
History Park on Wednesday 4th May. There were nearly 200
pupils from different schools at the park that day.

The Aughnacloy group were entertained with worksheet on
the history of the park and the Plantation of Ulster before
getting a tour of a Planters Bawn. In the bawn there was an
Ulster planter who gave the pupils a talk on his clothes, food
and the weapons he would have used. He treated the pupils
to a demonstration of firing a musket and how he loaded the
gun in battle.

After the planters bawn the pupils moved to a cottage
containing an Irish Gael. He sat by the fire, told stories of
his family and how they fought against the English who came
to take his land. He too was dressed in the clothes of the
time and pupils got to wear an Irish helmet for battle and
hold the weapons he would have used.

The pupils received a prize for their work sheets and had an
enjoyable day at the History Park.
