English Literature

This 2-year AQA GCSE Literature course is designed for those with enthusiasm and aptitude for reading, understanding and responding to a wide range of texts.

This exciting and enjoyable course promotes a love of Literature and encourages students to apply to 3rd level education where it will lead to excellent career opportunities in journalism, media law or teaching.

There are 3 main areas of study:

Prose

Pre 1914 -A collection of 19th Century Short Stories of romance, intrigue and murder.

Post 1914 – Heroes by Robert Cormier. The haunting story of a disfigured war hero, desperate to exact revenge on the one who ruined his life.

Poetry

Pre 1914 – Discover the richness of language used by poets such as Browning, Hopkins and Tennyson.

Post 1914 – Explore the themes of nature, love , family and loss through the poetry of Seamus Heaney and Gillian Clarke.

Drama

Pre 1914 – Follow the dramatic rise and fall of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, an unlawful king and his fiendish wife.

Post 1914 – A View from the Bridge by Arthur Miller. Stand with the lawyer and follow the journey of a flawed hero, whose jealousy culminates in an unforgivable crime against his family and Sicilian community.
