Background
The college which opened in 1963 occupies a pleasant rural site on the outskirts of Aughancoly. It serves a catchment area stretching along the Blackwater valley and including Caledon, Greystone, Innismagh, Ballygawley, Lisdoart and Favour Royal.
Aims of the College
- To develop the pupils’ self-confidence and self-discipline.
- To provide a happy and challenging learning environment.
- To promote the development in pupils of attitudes which will lead to high standards of behaviour and good relationships.
- To establish a creative and secure education partnership between the College, the contributory primary schools, the home and the community.
- To equip pupils to meet the challenges of adolescent and adult life.
- To recognise that all pupils are individuals and as such have unique talents and needs. The college, as a caring society, seeks to develop these qualities and provide the needs of each pupil.
Accommodation
In addition to modern classrooms there is specialist accommodation comprising;
- A totally refurbished Art & Design Room with adjoining ICT/Photography Room, offering pupils the opportunity to work with computer imagery and the photographic process.
- Assembly Hall and Gymnasium
- Library/ICT suite containing the latest in computer hardware with Internet access available through BT Broadband. College computer ratio of almost one computer to two pupils.
- A refurbished Music Suite along with new equipment.
- Home Economics, Science and Technology Departments.
- Major upgrade in the PE Department – new changing and shower facilities.
- Summer Scheme – organised in Aughnacoly College had a very successful programme with almost 100 children in attendance.
- Outdoor facilities include ample car parking, a secure point for buses to collect and deposit pupils. Playing facilities are in an all-weather pitch, football pitch and tennis courts.
Curriculum
All pupils follow a broad and balanced curriculum for the first three years which means the equipments of the Northern Ireland Curriculum for Key Stage III. At Key Stage IV all pupils take at least one subject from each of the six areas of study with a further choice of optional subjects.
COMPULSORY SUBJECTS – Religious Education, Physical Education, English, Mathematics, Science, Careers, LLW.
OPTIONAL SUBJECTS – English Literature, History, Geography, Business Studies, Information Systems, Music, Home Economics, Child Development, Double Award Science, Technology and Design, Physical Education, Art and Design, Motor Vehicle & Road User Studies and Construction studies and French.
These Programmes of study lead to all pupils being entered for GCSE. In Business studies students have the Opportunity to take RSA examinations.
Cross Curricular Themes
The Educational Theme are integrated into the Programmes of Study with particular emphasis on Literacy, Numeracy and ICT.
Careers Education
Pupils in Year 10-12 are provided with a structured programme of Careers Education. This includes advice on subject choices for Key Stage IV, visits to business and industry, guest speakers, interview techniques and work experience.
Link Course with South West College – Dungannon Campus.
Year 11 students now have the option to spend one day per week in South West College completing a range of practical activities. (Engineering, Emedia etc).
